Turn PDF into text you can edit, search, quote, or paste into notes. This PDF to text converter restores paragraph flow and shows the result in Chrome's side panel. The Extract Text from PDF Chrome extension copies everything at once or downloads a UTF-8 TXT file.

Documents with an embedded layer stay in your browser; no account is required. If a page is scanned or its characters are damaged, the extension explains the problem before offering OCR. Only approved pages are sent. Scanned pages are processed by pdf2md.dev, one of the OCR engines we use.

๐Ÿš€ Quick start

1. Open the document in Chrome, or choose a local file from the side panel 2. Click the extension icon to start PDF text extraction 3. Review the page map and any scan notice 4. Copy the result or save it as a PDF to text file

๐Ÿ“Œ What the extension does

1๏ธโƒฃ Reads embedded content without uploading the document 2๏ธโƒฃ Restores lines, paragraphs, columns, and reading order 3๏ธโƒฃ Detects image-only pages and damaged character encoding 4๏ธโƒฃ Keeps local results available if OCR is declined or unavailable 5๏ธโƒฃ Explains missing content instead of creating an empty download

โœจ Clean output instead of manual copying

โžค Use the text extractor from PDF files opened in a tab or stored on your computer โžค Convert PDF to text while keeping paragraph breaks and page order readable โžค Copy selected pages or the complete result to the clipboard โžค Download a TXT file with a predictable name and UTF-8 encoding โžค Search the output before you copy or save it

๐Ÿ” Scans and page quality

โ—† Normal pages use local processing through the bundled extraction engine โ—† Complex layouts are marked clearly instead of returning scrambled content โ—† When extracting text from PDF scans, you choose whether selected pages may use OCR โ—† A PDF and OCR summary identifies the local and uploaded pages โ—† The server allowance covers 30 pages a day and 200 a month, with a 10 MB limit for each selected sub-document

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Useful for study and office work

โ–ธ Researchers can collect quotations and references from papers โ–ธ Students can move lecture content into notes โ–ธ Analysts can prepare reports for further processing โ–ธ Office teams can reuse details from contracts, invoices, and archives โ–ธ Editors can extract PDF text and review long documents without copying one page at a time

๐Ÿ”’ Privacy by page

- Embedded content is read locally and creates no document upload - OCR never starts automatically; confirmation names the pages and destination - The relay streams selected pages and never writes the original to disk - Relay results expire; the source is not kept in extension history - Analytics include operational counts and timings, not content or filenames

๐Ÿงฉ Why Chrome asks for access

- Page access detects files open in tabs and shows the Extract button; file URL access lets you choose local documents after you enable it in Chrome. Ordinary website content is not read - Storage remembers settings, consent, and local result history - Downloads access creates TXT output, while clipboard access powers Copy - Side panel access keeps the result beside the source - Notifications and alarms report approved OCR status; access to api.extracttextfrompdf.app is used only for the server path you approve

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How to extract text from a PDF opened in Chrome? A: Open the document, click the extension icon, and review the result in the side panel. You can extract text from PDF online without sending a normal embedded layer to a converter site.

Q: Can I extract text from scanned PDF pages? A: Yes. Image-only pages are identified first. The extension does not OCR PDF scans automatically; PDF OCR starts only after your approval.

Q: How do I extract text from PDF image pages? A: It creates a sub-document from selected pages and uploads the whole source only when you explicitly choose that option.

Q: Does it work without a network connection? A: Yes for files with an embedded layer. Local extraction, Copy, and TXT download work offline. OCR requires a connection.

Q: Can I extract text from PDF file attachments on my computer? A: Yes. Enable Chrome access to file URLs, open the attachment, or choose it from the panel to get text from PDF documents stored on your computer.

Q: Can I rip text from PDF without losing paragraph breaks? A: The layout step groups characters into lines and paragraphs, detects columns, removes repeated headers, and repairs common line-break hyphenation.

Q: Can I convert PDF file to text when some pages are broken? A: Yes. Usable local pages appear first. Missing or damaged pages are marked, and OCR is offered only for them.
